1/72 Grumman® F-14D Tomcat™

We are delighted to announce that the F-14D Tomcat – already a popular Tamiya assembly kit in 1/48 scale (Item 61118) – is now being released in 1/72 scale.

This is in fact the first Tamiya-designed Tomcat in the 1/72 War Bird Series, which of course offers the modeler a streamlined assembly experience without letting up on the detail. The Tomcat enjoyed an active career from the early 1970s until 2006; initially given a fleet defense role, in the 1990s the Tomcat’s superb range saw that role expanded to include strike missions, and then later that decade the addition of the LANTIRN targeting pod meant it could undertake long-range bombing runs using laser-guided ordnance.

The F-14D was the final variant, which inherited its F-14B predecessor’s General
Electric F110-GE-400 engines and was given major upgrades to avionics. It reached units from 1992, serving in the skies over Iraq and Afghanistan. It finally retired from U.S. Navy service in 2006.

About the Model

• This is a 1/72 scale plastic model assembly kit. Wingspan: 272mm, fuselage length: 265mm.
• The sleek yet muscular F-14D form is depicted in style, with one highlight being the moving recreation of the variable sweep wing.
• Different parts - interchangeable after completion - depict sealing plates and air bags with the wing in different positions.
• Canopy, air intake side sections and fuselage sides are slide molded to ensure their shapes and surfaces are accurately rendered.
• Horizontal stabilizers move thanks to poly caps.
• The modeler has a choice of open and closed fuel probe (on the right of the nose) and boarding ladder and step (on fuselage left).
• Parts are included to recreate laser-guided bombs, LANTIRN pod and air-to-air missiles.
• The model comes with 2 seated crew figures and 5 U.S. Navy marking options.

The main canopy opens after assembly, and the nose-side ladder and steps can be assembled deployed or stowed.
Highlights in the detailed cockpit include consoles and instrumentation, with decals provided for the latter. The fuel probe can be assembled stowed or deployed.  Take a closer look at the fine moldings on the underbelly, like the panel lines. This image shows the model unpainted with panel line accents applied.

The variable sweep wing moves on internal gears. Wing parts are fitted on after fuselage assembly.

2 types of interchangeable sealing panel and airbag parts are included, for use with different wing positions.  A full ordnance line-up includes AIM-54C Phoenix, AIM-9L/M air-to-air missiles and GBU-12 laser guided bombs. Missiles have integrated fins.

Tamiya Scale Models require assembly and painting to achieve their full potential, allowing you to customize the model to your preference.

To build a Tamiya kit, you'll need a few essential tools:

  • Cutting tools such as hobby knives or sprue cutters to remove parts cleanly from the plastic sprues, (e.g., Tamiya #74053 Fine Craft Knife, #74153 Craft Knife II and #74093 Modelers Side Cutter)
  • Adhesives, like plastic cement, to bond parts securely. (e.g., Tamiya #87003 Tamiya Cement 40ml or #87182 Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Sanding tools, such as sandpaper or files, to smooth out edges and remove mold lines. (e.g., Tamiya #74046 Basic File Set, #87009 Medium Set Abrasives)
  • Paints (acrylic or enamel) and brushes or an airbrush system to bring the model to life with realistic colors.
  • You may want optional tools like tweezers, masking tape, or other tools for added precision.
