1/12 Mini Cooper 1.3i

Tamiya is delighted to announce an updated re-release of Item 12031, the 1/12 scale Mini Cooper 1.3i (originally sold until 2016). This refreshed version features updated decals and an improved instruction manual, along with additional masking stickers and new stickers for the floor carpet, enhancing both accuracy and the overall building experience.

First introduced in 1959, the Mini revolutionized small car design with its innovative front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. This clever configuration maximized passenger space within its compact two-box body, making it both practical and distinctive. The car’s exceptional balance and handling soon caught the attention of racing legend John Cooper, who refined the design and brought high-performance engineering into the mix.

In 1961, the tuned version was introduced to the public as the Mini Cooper, quickly gaining a reputation for its spirited driving characteristics and motorsport success. The Mini Cooper name was revived in 1990, this time featuring a 1.3-liter engine, and from 1991 onward it was equipped with a modern fuel injection system, further improving efficiency and performance.

With its charming, instantly recognizable styling, enjoyable driving dynamics, and rich automotive heritage, the Mini Cooper remains a true icon. This detailed scale model kit faithfully captures the essence of the original car, offering enthusiasts and hobbyists alike a rewarding and authentic building experience.

Tamiya Scale Models require assembly and painting to achieve their full potential, allowing you to customize the model to your preference.

To build a Tamiya kit, you'll need a few essential tools:

  • Cutting tools such as hobby knives or sprue cutters to remove parts cleanly from the plastic sprues, (e.g., Tamiya #74053 Fine Craft Knife, #74153 Craft Knife II and #74093 Modelers Side Cutter)
  • Adhesives, like plastic cement, to bond parts securely. (e.g., Tamiya #87003 Tamiya Cement 40ml or #87182 Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Sanding tools, such as sandpaper or files, to smooth out edges and remove mold lines. (e.g., Tamiya #74046 Basic File Set, #87009 Medium Set Abrasives)
  • Paints (acrylic or enamel) and brushes or an airbrush system to bring the model to life with realistic colors.
